It's delicate intro and it's singer's emotional, questioning voice make it among the last decade's most immediately recognisable songs. A four week chart - topper in the UK, Bring Me To Life racked up similar success elsewhere, propelling debut album Fallen towards sales of 17 million, and making singer Amy Lee just about the most famous female in rock. Yet, as Amy recalls, the song's origins relate to a simple meeting in a coffee shop. "It goes back to the start of my relationship with Josh [Hartzler], who is now my husband. I was in a difficult relationship at the time, and I was having coffee with Josh when he looked at me and said "Are you happy?" It freaked me out and there was a split second when I wondered if he could see into my eyes like open doors - hence the opening line of the song. I tried to hide it, pretend I was fine, but he knew I wasn't." While in the process of choosing material and talking to labels, Amy quickly wrote the first verse and chorus in her room, based on that experience. The song grew out of several older parts, with then - band members Ben Moody and David Hodges also contributing. While in the process of choosing material and talking to labels, Amy quickly wrote the first verse and chorus in her room, based on that experience. The song grew out of several older parts, with then - band members Ben Moody and David Hodges also contributing. "These were parts that we'd left alone for a bit, not wishing to overthink them, returning later with fresh ears", Amy says. Eighteen months later, with TV and radio playlisting Bring Me To Life, Amy and Josh met up again just before Evanescence departed on tour. "As I got into the car to say goodbye, I quickly reminded him about our conversation in the coffee shop and I said 'Bring Me To Life is about you - I just wanted you to know', I closed the door before he had a chance to respond. It was another few years before we finally hooked up, and now we're coming up to our fifth wedding anniversary." While unquestionably a breakthrough for Evanescence, the song initially came close to destroying them. A disagreement with record company Wind-Up involving the song's rap element - eventually performed by Paul McCoy of 12 Stones - almost finished the project. "The label thought we could be like Linkin Park with a female singer and therefore we should have a rapper. That made me furious because we didn't want to be 'like' anyone. It became a big fight - they wanted us to hire a full - time rapper for the band. In the end, there was a compromise, and we agreed to have a rap in this song alone. We like Paul - we were already friends and he came in and did a great job." The song - minus the offending rap - naturally remains part of the band's live set, and because it is connected so closely to the love of her life, it remains as relevant to its singer as ever. "I'm so lucky that I didn't write Bring Me To Life about some shithead", Amy sniggers in closing. "It's still real for me". Thanks to Evanescence Ireland
