Evanescence singer Amy Lee tells Lydia Jenkin how her focus has helped get the band through rocky times.
The voice of American goth-pop rock band Evanescence, Amy Lee, knew she wanted to be a rock star from a young age. Amy Lee has been the only constant of Evanescence through multiple line-up changes. "It was all I thought about. I was 100 per cent determined, and belligerently sure of it in a lot of ways when I was a 13 or 14-year-old." Her father had experienced the tough life of a musician and DJ, so though they were supportive, her parents also wanted her to keep studying and keep her options open. Amy and Tim from US goth-rock powerhouse Evanescence talk about their triumphant return.
Five years after their multi-platinum second album The Open Door, Evanescence are finally back with their self-titled comeback album. Amy Lee and Tim McCord from the band discuss getting the band back together, bucking expectations, tinkering with folk and electronic sounds, being unsatisfied with mediocrity, the pressure following their massive debut Fallen, and more. Following the release of the 2006 ‘Open Door’ album and tour Evanescence seemed to go into a period of self exile. After such a lengthy period of inactivity, during which band founder member and lead singer Amy Lee got married, there were doubts whether another album would actually be created. October 2011 saw the first new recordings from the same line-up that finished the ‘Open Door’ tour and this self titled CD would go on to hit the number 1 spot almost worldwide. Amy took some time out from the current US tour to give Dave Bott a ring for a short chat about how her time had been spent during the last few years and the making of the new album.
I have never been to an Evanescence concert before, and there are quite a few things that surprised me about the performance.
Number one? The fans. I feel sheepish in admitting that I genuinely did not know there were enough passionate Evanescence fans in Melbourne to fill an arena. Not only did they turn up in droves, but they arrived dressed to the nines, a lot in elaborate costuming involving corsets, black lipstick, stomping thigh high pleather boots and more. Where did these people come from? I definitely haven't shared a tram with them in recent times. I was impressed by their passion... and I have to say a little intimidated by their get ups! |
